Belgrade, Serbia (August 9, 2009) - The 13- to 15-year-old Canadian National Synchronized Swimming team had its best performance ever at the Comen Cup international meet held in Belgrade, Serbia, this past week. The team captured a bronze medal in the team routine event, behind only Russia and Greece. Two of the team members, Claudia Holzner and Gabriella Brisson, are from Calgary training throughout the year with the Calgary Aquabelles. Both girls contributed to team Canada’s win with eighth- and twelfth-place rankings in the figures component, placing the highest of any of the Canadians. In the Duet competition, Gabriella Brisson and Claudia Holzner represented Canada, swimming an amazing routine to capture fourth-place behind Russia, Greece, and the USA. Sarah Brunin Brouilette from Montreal swam the solo routine and placed fourth as well. With the strong placing of the Canadian National 13- to 15-year-old team and the significant contributions of Gabriella Brisson and Claudia Holzner, Canada has reinforced its presence in international synchronized swimming. Perhaps more notably, the Calgary Aquabelles continue to prove the strength of its athletes nationally and internationally. The Comen Cup, held at the Banjica Sports Centre in Belgrade, Serbia, featured over 175 athletes from 19 different countries across Europe and North America including many of the top ranked teams in the sport. |
