Calgary Masters Runner Wins Silver and Bronze in Finland

Canadian Masters wrap up a strong season.

Calgary-based masters athlete Helly Visser took home the silver medal in the 800-metre and a bronze in the 1500-metre at the World Masters Athletic (Track and Field) World Championships in Lahti, Finland, held on August 9. This was the first year Visser raced in the 75-79-year age group.

Visser was joined in Finland by Calgary's Roger Davies, 74, who competed in the 70-74-year men's category. Davies came in twelfth in the eight-kilometre cross-country (36:51); tenth in the 5000-metre (21:30), and eighth in the 1500-metre (5:43). Although Davies ran his best times for the season, he did not reach the medals podium. A member of the Calgary Roadrunners, DaviesĀ is the top-ranked Canadian master 70-74 years in the 800m, 1500m, 300m, and 5000m.

Ninety Canadians competed among the six thousand participants in Lahti, Finland.

Visser looks forward to competing in the World Masters Athletics Worlds Competition in Kamloops, Briish Columbia, on March 1, 2010, where she will compete in her first indoor world competition.

Davies plans on a podium finish at the next World Masters Athletic World Championships to be held in Sacramento, California, in 2011, where he will compete as a younger participant in the 75-79 category.
