Kenyan Robert Kiprono (Evans) Cheruiyot, 21, won the 114th running of the Boston Marathon while setting a new course record on April 19. He ran the marathon in two hours, five minutes and 52 seconds, beating the record of 2:07:14 set in 2006 by his namesake, Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot.
Cheruiyot won $150,000, plus a $25,000 bonus for setting a new course record. Teyba Erkesso, 27, from Ethiopia won the women's division in 2:26:11, winning with just a three-second lead in her Boston Marathon debut. She had held a wide lead until the 35-km water station, where she began to falter, allowing Russian Tatyana Pushkareva to begin closing the gap. Erkesso also was awarded $150,000 for winning the women's division. Cochrane runner Martin Parnell, 54, who is attempting to run 250 marathons this year to raise awareness of and funds for the charity Right to Play, clocked in at 4:42:41. Right to Play uses sport and play to enhance child development in disadvantaged areas. Canada's top-placing marathoner was Rami Bardeesy, 41, from Halifax, N.S., who placed 107th overall with a time of 2:27:22. The fastest western Canadian was Calgarian Ken Myers, 30, who placed 1139 with a time of 2:39:17. |
