| Ironman Comes to Calgary |
|
Ironman 70.3 Calgary will launch its innaugural race on August 2, 2009, the Rocky Mountain Triathlon Corporation and the Calgary Sport Tourism Authority announced on July 27, 2008.
The race will be the first and only half Ironman distance event in western Canada bearing the Ironman brand.
The race will begin with a single loop, 1.2-kilometre (1.9-mile) swim in Ghost Lake, followed by a point-to-point ninety-kilometre (fifty-six-mile) bike race from Ghost Lake to Calgary’s North Glenmore Park. The run will consist of a 21.2-kilometre (13.1-mile) out-and-back into the Weaselhead area and skirting the perimeter of the Glenmore Reservoir.
Part of the proceeds of the new event have been earmarked for the Jason Lapierre Scholarship Foundation at the University of Calgary, according to Kyle Marcotte, a Calgary-based professional Ironman triathlete. Lapierre was the victim of a tragic cycling accident in July 2006, when he was struck in Calgary by a motorist who lost control of his automobile. Marcotte and Lapierre were close friends and training partners. |
