Calgary’s New Water Centre Is Green and Healthy

The City of Calgary’s Water Centre has reached the gold certification level of LEED™, as recognized by the Green Building Council of Canada’s national, voluntary green building certification process.

The Water Centre was intended to meet the silver standard but has exceeded this by reaching gold, making it the first “gold” office building in Alberta, Canada.

The Water Centre was built to reduce water use by fifty-nine per cent and waste water by seventy-two per cent, as compared to a traditional office building of its size and scope (460 professional and 314 field employees). The building uses water wisely with its low-water-use fixtures, rain harvesting, and green roof that provides rainwater absorption that’s reused with grey water in landscaping and low-water use fixtures, such as the dual-flush toilets.

The Water Centre was built to encourage the health and wellness of its employees in other ways as well. The Centre encourages walking with fewer elevators and wider staircases and hallways. The cafeteria offers healthy food choices on-site and kitchen areas to support staff buying or bringing lunches. There is an on-site fitness facility for staff. And the building is located close to bike paths and to the LRT station to encourage activity and alternate modes of transportation.
